Virtua Fighter's Return: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has treated fans to fresh in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative silence. This new installment will be the first entirely new entry in the series since Virtua Fighter 5, with development entrusted to Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
The last major Virtua Fighter release was the 2021 remaster, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, for PlayStation 4 and Japanese arcades (with a Steam release slated for January 2025). Beyond that, the franchise has seen only remasters and the surprise physical release of Virtua Fighter 2.
First shown at NVIDIA's CES 2025 keynote, the new footage, while not actual gameplay, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style. The impeccably choreographed combat sequences, more akin to a cinematic fight scene than raw gameplay, hint at the polished final product. This return could solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games, following recent releases from other major franchises.
A New Visual Identity
The in-engine graphics showcase a significant visual evolution for Virtua Fighter. The series' signature hyper-stylized characters and polygonal aesthetic are being replaced by a more realistic style, blending elements reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The footage features Akira, the franchise's iconic character, in two new outfits, departing from his traditional bandanna and spiky hair.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also responsible for the Yakuza series and co-developing the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading the development of this new Virtua Fighter title, alongside their work on Sega's announced Project Century.
While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments offer hints of Sega's vision. However, the company's commitment to reviving the Virtua Fighter brand is evident, as evidenced by the ongoing releases of promotional material. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared during the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!"
