Despite mixed initial reactions, the PS5 Pro's sales projections remain robust, according to recent analyst assessments. The new console's release also reignites speculation surrounding a potential PlayStation handheld.

Enhanced PS5 Pro Capabilities Fuel Handheld Console Speculation
The $700 PS5 Pro's launch has prompted industry analysts to predict sales comparable to the PS4 Pro, even considering the significant price jump. Ampere Analysis' Piers Harding-Rolls noted the substantial price difference (40-50%) between the standard PS5 and the Pro model, exceeding that of the PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch.
Ampere Analysis projects around 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during its November 2024 launch window—approximately 400,000 fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial sales in 2016. Harding-Rolls highlighted the price disparity, stating that while it might dampen demand, PlayStation enthusiasts are less price-sensitive. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold approximately 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with projected sell-through reaching around 13 million units within five years. (Sell-through refers to direct consumer purchases from retailers.)
Further developments include PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny's confirmation that the PS5 Pro will enhance PSVR2 gaming via performance improvements. Cerny told CNET that the upgraded GPU will allow for higher-resolution PSVR2 game outputs, though specific titles haven't been announced. He also mentioned that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the PS5 Pro's AI upscaling technology, will be compatible with PSVR2. The PS5 Pro also boasts compatibility with existing PS5 accessories like the PS Portal.
This PS Portal compatibility, coupled with earlier rumors of a PlayStation handheld capable of running PS5 games, has reignited speculation about a potential new portable PlayStation console. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's advanced capabilities could pave the way for such a device.
