The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen nestled in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller replicates the DualSense's features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in place of the traditional touchpad. The Portal enables game streaming even when you're away from home, provided you have access to a very stable and fast internet connection. However, it's important to note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it requires a PS5 to function.
Excitingly, Sony has updated the PS Portal to allow game streaming directly from its PlayStation Now cloud service, eliminating the need for a PS5. With this new feature, Portal owners can connect either to their PS5 or directly to Sony’s cloud servers, which have recently been enhanced with quality-of-life beta updates launched in April. This gives users access to a vast library of over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. To take advantage of this, you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which at $18 a month, is a more cost-effective alternative to purchasing a PS5 and additional games.
While the PlayStation Portal offers a unique way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home, you can achieve similar functionality by using the PS Remote Play app on other mobile devices, such as the Steam Deck. However, setting this up is more complex, and you'll miss out on some of the DualSense's advanced features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal has exceeded my expectations in the most surprising way. It provides a much better experience than using a phone with a clip-on controller and works far more seamlessly than I had anticipated. I truly appreciate the flexibility it offers to play my PS5 games from anywhere with reliable Wi-Fi, especially when the TV is occupied by others playing the Switch. It's crucial to remember that the Portal is not a standalone device; it absolutely requires a PlayStation 5 to function. The only drawbacks that prevent it from being a perfect device are its current inability to connect to Wi-Fi that requires a web browser for login and its lack of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these limitations, it's an excellent solution for PlayStation Remote Play. Without these issues, it would be a must-have for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or needs to share the household TV."
