PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, No Grand Slam
If 2K were to poll gamers on which pro sports franchise they'd most like to revive, NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead returning for a third outing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's a promising title.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished feel. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional framerate drops on PC, didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, press forward to strike) proved intuitive. Difficulty levels adjust the swing's sensitivity, allowing for both casual and challenging gameplay. A "Perfect Swing" option provides a more forgiving experience for relaxed play. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee shots based on course obstacles adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics further enhance the realism. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, provided a satisfying start.
MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, similar to other sports titles. I was even offered a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that affects performance. The addition of weekly refresh Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator allows for detailed character customization, and skill trees provide further progression options. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs) is appealing, evoking memories of classic online golf experiences. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent execution rather than groundbreaking innovation. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it appears to be a solid offering for golf enthusiasts and players seeking a less demanding gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
