Recent filings with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) have shed light on exciting features of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, confirming that it will support Near Field Communication (NFC). This means fans can look forward to using their Amiibo figures with the next-generation console, just as they did with the original Switch. The NFC capability is integrated into the right Joy-Con, maintaining consistency with the current model. However, it's still unclear whether the Switch 2 will be compatible with existing Amiibo figures and their associated in-game content.
In addition to NFC, the FCC filings reveal that the Nintendo Switch 2 will offer versatile charging options, allowing users to power up the device through either its bottom or new top USB-C port. This feature aligns with expectations set after the console's official unveiling. The Switch 2 also steps up its connectivity game by supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an upgrade from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) supported by its predecessor. Notably, there is no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E in the documents, as pointed out by The Verge.
Regarding power, the Switch 2 remains rated for a maximum of 15V, yet the filings reference an AC adapter that can go up to 20V. This discrepancy leaves the actual charging speed of the console somewhat mysterious.
A recent Nintendo patent suggests an innovative twist for the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers: the ability to attach them upside down. This feature leverages gyro mechanics similar to those found in smartphones without screen locks. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails to secure the Joy-Cons, the new model will employ magnets. This design not only allows for greater flexibility in controller placement but also could lead to new gameplay mechanics, enhancing player experience by allowing customization of button and port positions.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was briefly showcased in a January trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, details about other games, the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, and the potential for a Joy-Con mouse were not disclosed. The gaming community is eagerly awaiting more information, which is expected to be fully outlined during a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time on April 2.
While Nintendo has not announced an official release window for the Switch 2, speculation suggests a launch between June and September. This speculation is fueled by upcoming hands-on events scheduled until June and statements from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon indicating that the console will be available before September.
