The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal a console that's noticeably larger than its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con detach from the original Switch, the tablet section expands and transforms into the upgraded form of the Switch 2. This significant size increase indicates Nintendo's shift away from the compact handhelds of the past, aligning more with the era of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
While Nintendo hasn't officially released exact size dimensions, we can estimate the Switch 2's size based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we got hands-on experience with a Switch 2 mock-up created by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify the accuracy at the time, the trailer closely matches the mock-up, suggesting our measurements are likely very close to the final product.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement is the diagonal of the display section (excluding bezels), which is the standard for screen sizes. This matches a rumor from early 2024. Based on this, we expect the display to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If our estimates are accurate, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly **30% larger diagonally** and **66% larger in overall area** than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display. This substantial increase could make the Switch 2 a visually impressive console, provided the display technology meets high standards.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen would be **45% larger diagonally** and **111% larger in surface area** than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2's screen would be **14% larger diagonally** and **30% larger in total area**.
In the era of portable PCs, the Switch 2 competes with devices like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED have 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens respectively, with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making them larger than any previous Switch console. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen would still be **8% larger diagonally** and **11% larger in overall area** than the Steam Deck OLED's display.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
Given the larger screen, the Switch 2 itself is bigger. You'd need spacious pockets to fit the original Switch, and the Switch 2 would likely require cargo pants or a bag.
Using measurements from Genki's mock-up at CES, we found the console to be just over **10.5 inches long** from edge to edge, including Joy-Cons, and **4.5 inches tall**. By scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up, we estimate the Switch 2 to be approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**.
In comparison, the original Switch measures **239mm long and 102mm tall**. If our figures are correct, the Switch 2 would be **25% larger** than its predecessor. It would also be about **61% larger** than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and **12% smaller** than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
We couldn't measure the depth of the Genki mock-up precisely, but the Switch 2's thickness seems comparable to the original Switch's half-inch thickness. So, while the overall footprint is significantly larger, the thickness remains similar.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The reveal trailer's transformation animation suggests that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers will have a similar width to the original Switch but be slightly taller. Using our method of scaling images, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**—the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system) but **13mm taller** to match the new console size. This would make the new Joy-Con **approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger** than the original Switch version, fitting the 8-inch 16:9 screen with an approximate 11mm bezel on the sides and an 8mm bezel on the top and bottom. This is slimmer on the sides than the original Switch, with similar top and bottom bezels.
These measurements are our best estimates and may not be exact when Nintendo releases official dimensions. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're confident that the Switch 2 will be roughly **25% larger** than the original Switch when we finally go hands-on with it later this year.
