The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning has ignited speculation about a potentially exciting feature: Joy-Con mouse functionality. A scene in the reveal trailer shows detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to what appear to be flat-bottomed connectors. These then glide across the surface, mimicking mouse movement on a mousepad. A closer look even reveals a possible slider pad on one connector, further fueling the theory.
Pre-reveal rumors suggested this capability, citing a sensor inside the Joy-Cons similar to those in computer mice. However, Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed this feature or its implications. Fans envision applications in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard-centric games like Civilization, while others anticipate innovative uses within Nintendo's first-party titles. The possibilities remain excitingly open.
While much about potential mouse support (and that mysterious new Joy-Con button) remains unknown, several details are confirmed. The system is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, launching in 2025. A new Mario Kart is in development, and backward compatibility with the original Switch is assured. Further software announcements are promised in an April Direct. Stay tuned for more Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
