Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action at Xbox Developer Direct 2025
Team Ninja Declares 2025: The Year of the Ninja
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the announcement of both Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," with Fumihiko Yasuda, Head of Team Ninja and Ninja Gaiden 4 Producer at Koei Tecmo Games, expressing his excitement for the series' evolution.
Developed by the powerhouse duo of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' highly anticipated return after a 13-year hiatus since Ninja Gaiden 3 (2012). This direct sequel promises to deliver the signature blend of brutally challenging yet incredibly rewarding gameplay the series is known for. The Xbox showcase is fitting, given Microsoft's long-standing relationship with Team Ninja, including exclusive Dead or Alive titles and the Microsoft Game Studios-published Ninja Gaiden 2 for Xbox 360.
Meet Yakumo: Ninja Gaiden 4's New Protagonist
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to achieve Master Ninja status. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, describes Yakumo's design as aiming to create "someone who can stand alongside Ryu, the pinnacle of what it means to be a ninja."
Yuji Nakao, Ninja Gaiden 4's Producer and Director at PlatinumGames, explains the reasoning behind the new protagonist: "Since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, long-time fans will still find plenty to love, as Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo." Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa remains a pivotal figure, playable and a formidable presence within the game's narrative. Yakumo will face challenging foes, culminating in a confrontation with the legendary Ryu Hayabusa himself.
A New Combat Style Emerges
Prepare for breakneck-speed combat with the signature brutality of the Ninja Gaiden series. Yakumo's introduction brings a new fighting style: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style. Masazaku Hirayama, Team Ninja Director, explains that Yakumo utilizes both Raven Style and Nue Style, assuring fans that "the action will feel right at home in the Ninja Gaiden series," despite the stylistic differences.
Nakao emphasizes the team's commitment to "staying true to the challenge and deep action that defines the Ninja Gaiden series, while incorporating the speed and dynamic expression of PlatinumGames." The game is currently 70-80% complete, entering the polishing phase, with more details to be revealed soon. Yasuda reinforces Ninja Gaiden 4's core as an action game, promising future opportunities for hands-on experiences.
Ninja Gaiden 4: Coming Fall 2025
Ninja Gaiden 4 launches Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title and is available to wishlist now. In an Xbox Wire interview, Yasuda highlighted Team Ninja's long-held desire to revive the series, crediting the close relationship between Koei Tecmo's President, Hisashi Koinuma, and PlatinumGames' CEO, Atsushi Inaba, for facilitating the collaborative development. He stated that "PlatinumGames had the expertise we felt was ideal for working on NINJA GAIDEN."
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: Available Now
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 classic, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, also included with Xbox Game Pass. This remake features additional playable characters like Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, previously seen in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. The project stemmed from fan feedback following the 2021 release of the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection. Yasuda explains that the team "wanted to give players something to enjoy as they wait for the release of NINJA GAIDEN 4," assuring fans that "this version is crafted to satisfy both those who played the original and newcomers discovering it as a current-generation action game."
