Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The collaboration, released in August 2024, featured Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato in designs intended to be faithful to the originals. However, this faithfulness came at a cost.
Where the Collaboration Went Wrong
The initial character designs, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the NIKKE team, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, leading to significant alterations. While the revised designs satisfied the licensors, they failed to resonate with the player base. The toned-down aesthetics lacked the appeal of the original concepts.
Player Feedback and Concerns
The issue extended beyond the character designs. Players found limited incentive to acquire the limited-time characters or costumes, particularly given the lack of significant visual differences between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, suffered from this issue most acutely, bearing a striking resemblance to her default appearance.
The NIKKE community values the game's distinctive style of stylized anime characters and engaging narrative. However, recent collaborations, including the Evangelion event, have been perceived as diluting this identity, leading to player dissatisfaction and a sense that the event wasn't worth the investment of time or resources. The overall event also felt drawn out and uninspired.
Shift Up acknowledges the negative feedback and promises to incorporate these lessons into future collaborations. Players can find both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE on the Google Play Store. The hope is that Shift Up will deliver more compelling and well-executed crossover events in the future. For more gaming news, check out our coverage of the Wuthering Waves Version 1.4 update.
