NieR: Automata's Death Penalty and Body Recovery: A Guide
NieR: Automata, despite its appearance, incorporates unforgiving rogue-like mechanics. Death can result in significant setbacks, particularly in the late game, due to the potential permanent loss of hard-earned items and upgrades. However, there's a chance to mitigate these losses. This guide explains the consequences of death and how to recover your body to minimize the impact.
Understanding the Death Penalty
Dying in NieR: Automata results in the loss of all XP earned since your last save, and more importantly, all currently equipped Plug-In Chips. While Plug-In Chips are replaceable, some are rare and expensive to acquire and upgrade. Respawning leaves your equipped Plug-In Chip slots empty, requiring re-equipping.
The lost Plug-In Chips aren't lost forever. You have one chance to retrieve them. Failure to recover your body before dying again results in the permanent loss of those chips.
Recovering Your Lost Body
After death, a blue body icon appears on your map, indicating your body's location. Interacting with it restores your Plug-In Chips. You then face a crucial decision:
Repair: This option doesn't restore lost XP, but transforms your previous body into an AI companion that will assist you until it's destroyed.
Retrieve: This option restores the lost XP earned since your last save.
Regardless of your choice, you can re-equip your recovered Plug-In Chips, replacing your current setup, or simply add them back to your inventory.
