David Leitch, the acclaimed director behind films like The Fall Guy, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train, is currently in negotiations to helm Netflix's adaptation of the popular video game series Gears of War. This project, based on Microsoft's iconic third-person action game, is being produced by Leitch and Kelly McCormick in collaboration with the game's developer, The Coalition. The script is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on Dune.
It's been over two years since Netflix acquired the rights to Gears of War, and it seems the project is finally gaining momentum. Alongside the movie, an adult animation series is also in development, set to release following the film. If these adaptations are successful, fans can expect even more Gears of War content in the future.
A major point of interest is the casting of Marcus Fenix, the protagonist of the Gears of War series. Dave Bautista, a wrestler turned actor, has expressed a strong desire to portray Marcus Fenix and has received endorsement from the game's co-creator, Cliff Bleszinski.
The current landscape for video game adaptations is thriving, with successful releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie, and the Sonic movies setting new benchmarks. Other notable adaptations include Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, and various Resident Evil projects.
In related news, Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer has expressed that the company remains committed to adapting its video games into other media, despite the mixed reception of the Halo TV series. Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from each project and gaining confidence to pursue more adaptations.
Meanwhile, The Coalition is actively developing Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel to the main series, though a release date has not yet been announced.
