Netflix has been making some significant moves recently, and their latest list of upcoming shows and games for this year brought both excitement and disappointment. While the lineup featured some eagerly anticipated titles, it also revealed the absence of several previously announced games. Notably, Netflix Games has decided to drop "Don’t Starve Together" from its mobile platform, and it's not the only casualty.
Six Names Missing from Netflix Games Lineup
The streaming giant has axed six games from its mobile lineup: "Don’t Starve Together," "Tales of the Shire," "Compass Point: West," "Lab Rat," "Rotwood," and "Thirsty Suitors." These cancellations are part of Netflix's ongoing effort to refine its gaming portfolio. This isn't the first instance of Netflix pulling the plug on announced games; "Crashlands 2" was also removed from their lineup after beta testing had begun in some regions.
Netflix's strategy appears to be shifting towards narrative-driven games and titles that tie in with their popular shows and movies, moving away from indie games. A prime example of this new direction is Netflix Stories, which will be adding popular shows like "Ginny & Georgia" and "Sweet Magnolias" later this year.
What About the Promised Games Like Don’t Starve Together?
Despite the cancellations, most of these games are still set to launch on other platforms. "Don’t Starve Together," which was announced in June 2024 as part of a trio of Klei Entertainment games coming to Netflix, will now be ported to mobile by Playdigious. Similarly, "Lab Rat" and "Rotwood," the other two Klei Entertainment titles, have also been dropped from Netflix's plans, though "Rotwood" remains available in early access on Steam.
"Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game," a cozy life sim originally slated for a fall 2024 release, has been delayed to early 2025. The absence of the Netflix Games logo from its website confirms its exclusion from Netflix's lineup.
"Compass Point: West," developed by Next Games (a studio owned by Netflix), was one of the earliest announced titles for the platform, making its cancellation particularly surprising. Lastly, "Thirsty Suitors," a stylish, story-driven RPG developed by Outerloop Games and published by Annapurna Interactive for Steam and consoles, was also set to come to mobile via Netflix but has been dropped.
This concludes our update on the games Netflix has decided to scrap. If you're interested in what else Netflix has to offer, you can explore their current lineup on the Google Play Store.
In other news, Netflix Stories will be adding "Ginny & Georgia" and "Sweet Magnolias" later this year, aligning with their focus on narrative-driven content.
