For those eagerly awaiting news of The Last of Us Part 3, renowned series creator Neil Druckmann has delivered a sobering update. In a recent interview with Variety, primarily focused on the HBO series, Druckmann effectively dashed hopes of a third installment. When questioned about the possibility, he sighed and stated, "I was waiting for this question… I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
This statement leaves the future of the game series uncertain. Naughty Dog is currently deeply involved in the development of Intergalactic, a title unveiled at The Game Awards 2022, with no release date currently set. Given the significant time investment likely required for Intergalactic, it seems improbable that the studio has the resources to simultaneously develop The Last of Us Part 3 in the foreseeable future.
However, Druckmann's statement leaves room for interpretation. He might be strategically avoiding commitment, or perhaps his perspective could evolve over time. Alternatively, he may genuinely be finished with the Last of Us narrative in its video game form.
For fans still craving more of the Last of Us universe, the second season of the HBO series premieres April 13th on Max. While Druckmann remains unsure about the total number of seasons, an HBO executive suggested four seasons might be the final count.
