MultiVersus: A Farewell After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the closure of MultiVersus following its upcoming fifth and final season. The game will officially shut down on May 30, 2025.
Season 5: The Final Chapter
The official announcement, made on January 31, 2025, confirmed that Season 5, running from February 4th to May 30th, 2025, will be the last. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes), both unlockable through gameplay. After Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The reasons for the shutdown remain unstated.
Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy
While online servers will be discontinued, a local gameplay mode will allow offline play, either solo against AI or with up to three friends. To access this, players must download the latest version of the game between February 4th (9 AM PST) and May 30th (9 AM PDT). The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.
Real-money transactions ceased on January 31st, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium can be used until the end of Season 5.
A Short but Impactful Run
Launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play fighting game, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, including rollback netcode and a PvE mode, but failed to address persistent issues such as technical problems and player dissatisfaction with microtransactions. Reportedly, player counts dropped significantly in July 2024.
At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30th, 2025.
