NetherRealm Studios, the developers behind Mortal Kombat 1, have unveiled the first gameplay footage for the T-1000, a new DLC guest character inspired by the iconic Terminator 2 villain. The T-1000's moveset echoes his cinematic origins, featuring attacks like blade and hook arms, reminiscent of characters Baraka and Kabal from the Mortal Kombat series. A standout moment in the gameplay showcases the T-1000 morphing into a liquid metal state and executing an uppercut similar to Glacius from Killer Instinct.
The character is brought to life with the voice and likeness of Robert Patrick, who portrayed the T-1000 in the 1991 film. In the teaser, Patrick's voice is heard for the first time in the game during a confrontation with Johnny Cage. The footage culminates in a Fatality that recreates the memorable truck chase scene from Terminator 2, with the T-1000 emerging from the driver's seat to unleash a barrage of gunfire at Cage.
Simultaneously, NetherRealm announced the addition of Madam Bo as a DLC Kameo fighter. Known from the base story of Mortal Kombat 1 as a beloved elderly restaurant owner who confronts Smoke and his minions, Madam Bo's brief gameplay appearance in the teaser shows her assisting the T-1000 during a match against Johnny Cage.
The T-1000 will be available starting March 18 for early access to Khaos Reigns owners, with a general release on March 25. Madam Bo will also be available on March 18 as a free update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase.
As the final character addition to the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 joins a roster that includes Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Speculation about future content, including a potential Kombat Pack 3, continues amid discussions on the game's sales performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, has expressed ongoing support for the Mortal Kombat franchise. CEO David Zaslav stated in November that the company plans to focus heavily on four key titles, including Mortal Kombat.
Ed Boon, the chief of Mortal Kombat's development, mentioned in September that NetherRealm had decided on their next project three years ago but assured continued support for Mortal Kombat 1. While many fans anticipate a new installment in the Injustice series, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. Boon has hinted at various factors influencing their decision to release another Mortal Kombat game instead of alternating with Injustice, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Despite these changes, Boon has not ruled out future Injustice games, leaving the door open for the beloved DC fighting game franchise.
