The challenge of crafting new weapon types in the Monster Hunter series is significant. This article delves into the complexities of weapon balancing and the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration.
Monster Hunter Wilds: A New Weapon Type?
The Elusive 15th Weapon
After over a decade with the same weapon roster, the Monster Hunter franchise is considering a new addition. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the Insect Glaive's introduction. While Tokuda expressed interest in a new weapon, he explained the difficulties in creating one that doesn't overlap existing options. He highlighted the extensive resources dedicated to refining existing weapons, stating that these efforts are prioritized over adding a new one.
Capcom's Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom continues to innovate, enhancing weapons in MH Wilds with features like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating player feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized maintaining the core feel of each weapon.
Weapon balancing across titles is a key focus, with a distinct design concept for each weapon in each game. Tokuda acknowledges that the true test of a weapon's design comes from player experience. He also discussed the balancing challenges presented by Iceborne's additions to existing weapons, noting that MH Wilds aims for a fresh start, re-evaluating every weapon for its intended gameplay.
Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds Collaboration Event Phase 2
Phase 2 of the MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration event begins February 28, 2025, featuring the Chatacabra and 12 Hope weapons from MH Wilds. Two new layered armors (Hope and Seikret mount-themed) will also be available. Players can earn vouchers for MH Wilds items via limited-time quests.
Niantic's Sakae Osumi hinted at future collaborations, expressing a desire to incorporate more monsters from Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
