Monster Hunter Wilds is contemplating a 24-hour extension for their Open Beta Test 2 due to the unexpected PlayStation Network outage over the weekend. Dive in to learn more about the proposed extension and the events that led to this decision.
Monster Hunter Wilds to Extend Beta Test 2
PS5 Players Could Not Play for 24 Hours
Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) is considering extending their Open Beta Test 2 by one day to compensate for the PlayStation Network outage that left players unable to access online games, including the MH Wilds beta, for 24 hours. The outage started at 6 PM EST on February 7th and services were restored by 8 PM EST, according to the official NA X (Twitter) support account.
While the exact timing of the extension hasn't been announced, it's confirmed to be a 24-hour period, potentially extending from the end of Beta Test 2 Part 2 up until February 27th, the day before the game's official release. Part 1 of Beta Test 2 has already concluded, and Part 2 is set to kick off on February 13th at 7 PM PT. Players can look forward to resuming their adventures and perhaps encountering the amusing low-poly bug that transforms detailed characters into comical, blocky figures.
The Cursed Low-Poly Bug Returns
Capcom has noted that the beta test builds are outdated and do not represent the final game's quality. This has led to various bugs, including the well-known low-poly character glitch where textures fail to load properly, turning characters, Palicos, and monsters into bizarre, blocky versions of themselves.
Instead of frustration, fans have embraced this glitch, sharing their low-poly experiences on social media and even expressing a desire for MH Wilds to celebrate its early, polygonal stages in the future. In an interview with GamesRadar+, the MH Wilds team acknowledged the bug and expressed amusement at players' reactions, while encouraging them to experience the full game with the correct specifications upon its launch later this month.
Monster Hunter Wilds marks a new chapter in the acclaimed series, introducing an open-world setting called the Forbidden Lands. Players will assume the role of the Hunter, tasked with exploring this mysterious region and confronting its apex predator, the White Wraith. The eagerly awaited action-RPG is scheduled for release on February 28th, 2025, on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
PlayStation Network's Largest Outage in Recent Years
PlayStation attributed the outage, which lasted a full day, to an "operational issue" and issued an apology via its NA X (Twitter) support account. As compensation, users with an active PlayStation Plus membership will receive an additional five days added to their current subscription.
However, fans expressed dissatisfaction with Sony's communication during the outage, recalling the panic and concern similar to the 2011 PSN outage caused by a hacker attack. That incident compromised around 77 million user accounts and left the PSN offline for three and a half weeks. Sony's proactive communication during the 2011 event, detailing the situation and the necessary security measures, starkly contrasts with the more recent outage's handling.
