Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods
Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update has reportedly disabled custom-made mods, a popular feature among players since the game's launch. This change, while unannounced, effectively prevents players from using modified character skins and other cosmetic alterations.
The game, launched in early December to considerable success, introduced Season 1 on January 10, 2025. This season boasts the addition of the Fantastic Four as playable characters (Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman are currently available, with the Thing and Human Torch expected later), a new Battle Pass, updated maps, and a new Doom Match mode.
NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, even for purely cosmetic modifications, and has previously issued bans. The Season 1 update appears to have preemptively addressed this by implementing hash checking, a technique verifying data authenticity and rendering existing mods unusable.
This move against modding isn't entirely surprising. NetEase has previously acted against specific mods, including one featuring Donald Trump's likeness replacing Captain America. While some players express disappointment over the loss of customizable content, and creators mourn unreleased work, the decision is arguably a necessary business strategy.
Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play game reliant on in-game purchases for revenue, primarily through character bundles offering new skins and cosmetics. The availability of free, custom-made cosmetics could significantly impact the game's profitability. Therefore, the ban on mods serves to protect NetEase's revenue model. While some mods contained controversial content, including nude skins, this is likely not the sole reason for the update.
