Vincent van Gogh's renowned Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, reflects his deep emotional connection to the flower, symbolizing gratitude. He famously wrote to a friend: "*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"
In 1888, he painted four sunflower versions; in 1889, he revisited the motif, creating repetitions of the third and fourth versions. The fourth version and its repetitions are the most famous. The original (F454) resides in London's National Gallery, one repetition (F457) in Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic, (F458), at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum.

The LEGO Van Gogh Museum collaboration, LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, is a three-dimensional recreation of F458, using abstract pieces to capture van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.

The 2615-piece set includes 34 numbered bags, an instruction booklet, and a QR code linking to a podcast about van Gogh. The build process is thoughtfully designed; you first construct the frame, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a satisfyingly realistic approach.

A clever detail mirrors Van Gogh's addition of a wooden strip to the top of the original canvas. LEGO replicates this with brown bricks, a subtle nod to the painting's history, visible only to the builder. This unexpected detail adds a layer of enjoyment and exclusivity to the experience.

While the sunflower construction is repetitive, reflecting Van Gogh's meticulous process, it's a rewarding build. The depiction of wilting flowers and varied perspectives adds depth and visual interest. The final result is strikingly realistic.

The completed artwork is beautifully displayed on the wall, a testament to its quality. The enduring appeal of this set is evident; even a week after completion, it remains a captivating piece. This is a fantastic LEGO set, highly recommended.
