inZOI's Approach to Explicit Content: A Closer Look
As the release of inZOI for early access approaches, fans are eager to learn more about the game's features, particularly those involving sex and nudity. The game's developers recently held a live "Ask Me (almost) Anything" segment on inZOI's official Discord channel, where three team leads, including Assistant Director Joel Lee, addressed these topics. Let's delve into how the developers are managing explicit content and the level of realism they're aiming for.
"Sort Of" A Sex Feature
During the Q&A, Lee tackled the sensitive topic of sex in the game with a safe-for-work response. He explained, "Our answer is: sort of. There is a feature in the game that you obviously know what's happening, the male Zoi and the female Zoi are together, likely in bed, with the intention of creating babies. How visually apparent is that? That's where you have to go to your imagination. What you're seeing is not what you're seeing; you have to assume that's what's happening. Is that clear enough for everyone? It's there. Sort of. Maybe not to the level that everyone would have been expecting."
This statement indicates that while sex will be a feature in inZOI, the animations and visuals will be toned down to appeal to a broader audience. Compared to the more whimsical and animated approach seen in games like The Sims, inZOI aims for a more realistic portrayal, albeit with some imaginative interpretation required from players.
Challenges with Blurring Effects
Players have also noticed that Zois in the game shower with their towels on, prompting questions about the game's visual effects. The developers explained that pixelated blurring effects, which work well in cartoony games like The Sims, do not fit inZOI's more realistic art style. When applied, these effects appeared more sexually suggestive than intended. Moreover, during testing, a bug allowed players to see Zois fully naked in mirrors, which the developers have since worked to fix.
Catering to a Wide Audience
Despite the discussions around explicit content, inZOI has been rated T for Teen by the ESRB, similar to The Sims 4. This rating ensures the game remains accessible to a broad audience while maintaining a safe-for-work environment. Lee emphasized the team's goal to create a game that appeals to various age groups, stating, "We wanted to provide a game that was widely available to as many age groups as possible."
