Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards a creative "dead end." He made these comments during his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the Saturn Awards, celebrating his role in Dream Scenario.
According to Variety, Cage emphasized his belief in the irreplaceable role of human experience in artistic expression. He stated that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition, and that allowing AI to manipulate even a small aspect of a performance will ultimately compromise the integrity and authenticity of the art. He argued that the purpose of art, particularly acting, is to mirror the complexities of the human experience through a deeply personal and emotional creative process – a process he believes AI cannot replicate. He urged actors to protect themselves from AI interference, advocating for authentic and honest expression.
Cage's concerns echo those of other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI has been used to recreate entire performances, even in high-profile video games. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have openly criticized this practice, highlighting the potential for financial exploitation.
The film industry itself is divided on the issue. While renowned director Tim Burton expressed similar concerns, calling AI-generated art "very disturbing," director Zack Snyder has advocated for embracing AI's potential in filmmaking.
