The Lord of the Rings Books Reading Order

We've divided Tolkien’s Middle-earth works into two sections: The Lord of the Rings saga and additional reading. The Hobbit and LotR books follow the adventures of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, listed by their narrative chronology. The additional reading section includes works published after Tolkien's passing, ordered by publication date.

These brief plot summaries contain only mild spoilers, focusing on broad plot points and character introductions.

1. The Hobbit

The Hobbit, Tolkien’s first Middle-earth book by both in-universe chronology and real-world release date, was published in 1937. It follows Bilbo Baggins as he joins Thorin and Company on a quest to reclaim the dwarves’ ancestral home from the dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo encounters Gollum and acquires the One Ring, leading to the climactic Battle of Five Armies.

2. The Fellowship of the Ring

Published nearly two decades after The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring begins with Bilbo's 111th birthday, where he leaves the One Ring to Frodo. After a 17-year gap, Frodo embarks on his journey to destroy the Ring, forming the Fellowship with Samwise, Pippin, Merry, Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, Boromir, and Gandalf. By the end, Frodo decides to continue alone but is joined by the loyal Samwise.

3. The Two Towers

The Two Towers follows the split Fellowship as Frodo and Sam journey towards Mordor, encountering Gollum, while the others confront orcs and the corrupted wizard Saruman.

4. The Return of the King

The Return of the King concludes the epic journey as the Fellowship battles Sauron's forces, and Frodo and Sam reach Mount Doom. After the climax, the hobbits return to the Shire to face a final challenge omitted from the films. The book ends with the resolution of each character's fate.
