George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has declared his enthusiastic approval of the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, calling it "as faithful an adaptation as one could reasonably expect."
In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that HBO has completed filming for the six-episode series, slated for release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his previous experience with House of the Dragon, Martin expresses strong admiration for this adaptation.
"Having viewed all six episodes (the final two in rough cuts), I was thoroughly captivated," he wrote. "Dunk and Egg have always held a special place in my heart, and the actors portraying them are truly exceptional. The entire cast delivers outstanding performances. Just wait until you meet the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall!"
He emphasized the show's faithfulness to The Hedge Knight, the first novella in the Dunk and Egg series: "It's as faithful an adaptation as one could reasonably hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject)."
However, Martin cautioned viewers expecting intense action sequences: "While there's a spectacular fight scene, there are no dragons, large-scale battles, or White Walkers. This is a character-driven story, focusing on themes of duty, honor, and chivalry."
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). Although the premiere is still months away, HBO has already shared several images and a short teaser trailer.
Martin concluded his post with a playful acknowledgment of his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter: "Next up is adapting 'The Sworn Sword,' the second Dunk & Egg tale. And once The Winds of Winter is complete, I'll need to tackle 'The Village Hero' and the other stories waiting in the wings. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll all keep me on my toes!"
