God of War TV Series: A Creative Reset
The Show is Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that the God of War series is restarting from the beginning. Showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the project, despite reportedly completing multiple scripts. Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining attached include executive producer Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio Creative Director), along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.
Future Plans Despite Setbacks
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War adaptation was initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, following the success of the 2018 game reboot. This collaboration is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television. This initiative led to the establishment of PlayStation Productions in 2019. The announcement also included a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, with further adaptations of established franchises planned.
Already released are Uncharted (Naughty Dog, 2022), the highly successful The Last of Us (2023, with season 2 slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Other projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film (April 25, 2025).
