In a surprising twist, 11 bit Studios, the developers behind Frostpunk, announced their next venture in the series on April 24 via a Twitter (X) post. Frostpunk 1886 is not just another sequel but a complete remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.
The announcement highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will introduce a brand-new Purpose Path, eagerly awaited mod support, and much more, all while preserving the essence of the original game. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the developers shared their vision for this ambitious project.
11 bit Studios is transitioning from their proprietary Liquid Engine, used for the first game, to the more advanced Unreal Engine. This shift was inspired by their experience with Frostpunk 2, which was developed using Unreal Engine 5. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.
Eyeing A 2027 Release
Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is slated for a 2027 release. The developers are dedicated to crafting an experience that not only welcomes newcomers to the Frostpunk universe but also satisfies the cravings of long-time fans, offering a game they'll want to play again and again.
