Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is defying retirement plans to develop a new game, a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. This follows the successful release of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially envisioned as his final project.
A New Chapter, Inspired by FFVI
Sakaguchi's decision stems from the positive experience working with the Fantasian team. He aims to create a game that blends classic elements with innovative approaches, describing it as "something old but new." This project, he says, will act as "part two of my farewell note."
Development and Speculation
While details remain scarce, Sakaguchi confirmed in a 2024 Famitsu interview that development is underway, estimating approximately two more years until completion. A Mistwalker trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" fueled speculation of a sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely be a fantasy RPG, consistent with his previous work.
Reunion with Square Enix
The collaboration with Square Enix to bring FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to multiple platforms (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch) in December 2024 marked a significant milestone. Sakaguchi reflected on this partnership, describing it as a "fascinating experience" given his history with the company. Despite this reunion, he maintains his focus on new creations and has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise.
