"Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Sparks Switch 2 Remake Rumors"

The buzz around a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has intensified following Square Enix's launch of an official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. This site, available in Japanese, commemorates the game's initial release on July 7, 2000, and highlights the upcoming 25th anniversary celebrations.

The website teases "various projects" including merchandise and collaborations, fueling speculation among fans that a long-awaited remake might be on the horizon. The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed, especially with Nintendo's Switch 2-focused Direct scheduled for April 2. Many are hopeful that Square Enix could use this platform to announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the new console.

Despite the excitement, it's worth noting that the website's content focuses on merchandise and collaborations. The mention of "various projects" has, however, sparked widespread discussion and anticipation.

Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, hinted at the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9. He suggested that due to the game's extensive content, a remake might not fit into a single title and could potentially follow the multi-part format seen with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Adding to the intrigue, earlier in 2024, Yoshi-P announced Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector’s and Digital Collector’s Editions of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These include the iconic Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders also receiving a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at the significance of these inclusions, saying, "You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here, but the reason is a secret,” before playfully zipping his lips.

The rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been circulating since a 2021 Nvidia leak, which listed several unannounced Square Enix titles, including the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC. While some of these titles have since been confirmed or released, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unannounced. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reportedly in development as of June 2021, though no further updates have been provided since.
