Exciting news for fans of the Final Fantasy VII series: the third and final installment of the FF7 Remake trilogy is set to launch on the PS5. Dive into the details about the much-anticipated conclusion of this epic saga!
FF7’s Remake Part 3 Will Still Release on PS5
PlayStation enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief as Yoshinori Kitase, the producer, and Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the FF7 Remake series, confirmed in an interview with 4Gamer on January 23, 2025, that FF7 Remake Part 3 will indeed be available on the PS5. Addressing concerns about the release platforms of previous entries, Kitase reassured fans, stating, "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)."
With the PS5 now well into its lifecycle, there's speculation about the trilogy's future on the next PlayStation console. However, details about the PS6 remain scarce.
FF7 Remake Part 3 Release Date
While Square Enix has kept the release date of FF7 Remake Part 3 under wraps, development reportedly started concurrently with Part 2, with full production accelerating post the February 2024 release of FF7 Rebirth. Leveraging assets from the previous games and a completed story draft, the final installment might be closer than fans think.
In a recent update to Famitsu on January 23, 2025, Hamaguchi shared, "It’s going very well. We started working on the third game right after FFVII Rebirth ended, and we have a build that will confirm what we should aim for as a game by the end of 2024. We can already see the direction of where we will land, so we have been working towards that goal since the beginning of this year. We are progressing without any delay from the schedule we planned when we launched the remake project, so we hope you will look forward to it."
Kitase also expressed satisfaction with the story's conclusion, stating, "At least I'm very satisfied with it, so I'm sure it will be a conclusion that will satisfy the fans as well."
FF7 Remake Part 3 Will Allegedly Be a Timed Exclusive Game
Although the exact release date remains undisclosed, a report from the Washington Post on March 6, 2024, indicated that PlayStation secured timed exclusivity for the FF7 Remake trilogy. This means FF7 Remake Part 3 will initially be exclusive to PS5 for a certain period before becoming available on other platforms.
Following the pattern of its predecessors, FF7 Remake (2020) was a PS4 exclusive for a year before hitting PC via Epic Games Store and Steam. FF7 Remake Intergrade, an enhanced version of the first game, was exclusive to PS5 for six months before its PC release. FF7 Rebirth followed suit, with its PC version launching on January 23, 2025, after its initial PS5 exclusivity in February 2024.
Square Enix Multi-Platform Strategy Amidst Declining Sales
Despite the success of the FF7 Remake series, Square Enix reported declining sales for its HD titles in their financial results on March 31, 2024. Titles like FF16, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, and FF7 Rebirth contributed to this trend.
The company cited "operating losses grew due to higher development cost amortization and advertising expenses, as well as higher content valuation losses versus the previous fiscal year." In response, Square Enix plans to "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs," aiming to boost sales.
This shift in strategy suggests that more of Square Enix's HD titles could soon appear on Xbox, Switch 2, and other platforms, despite their longstanding partnership with PlayStation.
