Microsoft has delayed the release of Fable from 2025 to 2026, but offered a first glimpse of exciting new gameplay footage to soften the blow. This highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Xbox franchise, originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being crafted by Playground Games, the acclaimed studio behind the Forza Horizon series.
In a recent Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his complete confidence in Playground Games, highlighting their track record of critically acclaimed, award-winning titles like Forza Horizon, boasting impressive Metacritic scores and stunning visuals. He described the new Fable as incorporating Playground's signature visual flair, combined with captivating gameplay, signature British humor, and a breathtakingly realized version of Albion, drawing inspiration from previous entries while offering a fresh perspective. Duncan stressed that the delay prioritizes delivering the best possible game experience.
Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled approximately 50 seconds of pre-alpha gameplay. This brief but impactful footage showcased Fable's combat system, featuring various weapons (a one-handed sword, two-handed hammer, two-handed sword) and magic (a fireball attack). City exploration, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and the iconic chicken-kicking moment were also included. The visuals clearly demonstrate the high level of fidelity Duncan mentioned. One memorable scene depicts the protagonist setting a trap baited with sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature, leading to an ensuing battle.
Initially announced in 2020 as a “new beginning,” Playground Games’ Fable reboot received further attention in 2023’s Xbox Game Showcase and again during the June 2024 Xbox Showcase event. This marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3 and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming releases.
