Sega's recent trademark filings for the long-dormant Ecco the Dolphin IP have ignited speculation about a potential franchise revival. This follows a December 2024 trademark application, as reported by Gematsu.
The Return of Ecco?
Sega's December 27th, 2024 trademark filings for "Ecco" and "Ecco the Dolphin" have sparked significant excitement among fans. The franchise, originally developed by Appaloosa Interactive (formerly Novotrade International) and published by Sega in 1992, features Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin battling extraterrestrial threats. Four installments were released before the series went quiet in 2000. A planned sequel, Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe, was reportedly canceled following the decline of the Sega Dreamcast.
While Sega remains a prominent game developer and publisher, Appaloosa Interactive is no longer operational. However, many of its staff, including Ecco the Dolphin's creator, Ed Annunziata, continue to work in the industry. Annunziata, in a 2019 interview with NintendoLife, expressed his enduring hope for a future Ecco sequel, stating, "One thing I can say is in the future, people are playing this game. I never give up!"
Currently, no concrete details regarding the future of Ecco the Dolphin have been revealed. However, the trademark filings suggest the possibility of a new entry in the series, adding to Sega's already impressive roster of projects. In recent years, Sega has announced numerous titles, including revivals of classic franchises like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Virtua Fighter, along with new IPs such as Project Century and a new RPG-style Virtua Fighter. The future of Ecco remains uncertain, but the recent activity suggests a possible return is not out of the question.
