Peter Hoar, the Emmy-nominated director behind The Last of Us, is spearheading a reboot of the beloved British sci-fi series Blake’s 7.
The updated adaptation will be produced by Hoar’s newly formed company, Multitude Productions, which he launched alongside West End producer Jason Haigh-Ellery and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder executive Matthew Bouch. The project is set to be pitched to potential buyers soon, with Bouch expressing a strong desire for it to land at the BBC—where the original series last aired 45 years ago.
The outlet also highlights that the original series, which ran for four seasons from 1978 to 1981, is expected to secure funding from American streaming platforms and European production houses. Hoar will direct the reboot following his acclaimed work on “Long, Long Time,” the standout episode of The Last of Us that earned him widespread critical acclaim.
Originally created by Terry Nation—best known for introducing Doctor Who’s iconic Daleks—Blake’s 7 chronicled the adventures of political dissident Roj Blake (Gareth Thomas), who leads a small band of rebels against the oppressive Terran Federation, which controls Earth and numerous colonized planets, according to Deadline.
Hoar likened the reboot to the critically praised Andor series, citing its “integrity, wit, and sophistication” as shared qualities—not its budget.
“The Blake’s 7 story is legendary because it was given the [British police show] Softly, Softly timeslot, originally meant for police dramas with a budget designed for one large set and a handful of location shoots,” Hoar said in a statement. “At the time, it felt like it mattered. Those shows seeped into me. I could see they were strapped for cash, but I learned to overlook the wobbling sets and just enjoy the journey.”
No release date has been announced for the reboot yet, but fans may hope to see it arrive in 2027.
