By Design Review

This review is based on a screening at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The film, while visually stunning, ultimately falls short of its ambitious premise. The cinematography is breathtaking, capturing the stark beauty of the Icelandic landscape with a masterful eye for detail. However, the narrative, while intriguing initially, becomes muddled and meandering, losing its way amidst a plethora of symbolic imagery that feels ultimately unearned. The performances are uneven, with some actors delivering compelling portrayals while others struggle to convey the emotional depth required by the script. The score, however, is a highlight, perfectly complementing the visual landscape and enhancing the film's overall atmosphere. While the film's ambition is commendable, its execution is inconsistent, resulting in a viewing experience that is both captivating and frustrating in equal measure.
