Capcom announces a remastered version of the original Dead Rising, bringing the classic zombie-slaying action to current-gen consoles. Nearly a decade after the release of Dead Rising 4 (2016), which followed successful installments on Xbox 360 and a launch title for Xbox One, the franchise has been relatively quiet. Dead Rising 4's mixed reception likely contributed to Capcom's decision to put the series on hold.
While the original Dead Rising (2006) was initially an Xbox 360 exclusive, an enhanced version appeared on multiple platforms a decade later, preceding Dead Rising 4. In the interim, Capcom focused heavily on its Resident Evil franchise, achieving remarkable success with remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4, alongside new mainline entries like Resident Evil Village. This shift in attention likely explains the extended absence of a new Dead Rising title.
Eight years after the last Dead Rising game, Capcom unveiled Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, showcased in a brief YouTube trailer depicting the game's opening sequence. While platforms and a release date remain unannounced, a 2024 release is highly probable.
Capcom's Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster
Even with a 2016 enhanced version for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, a new remaster offers fans improved visuals and performance. The question arises whether Capcom will remaster the sequels, some over a decade old. However, given Capcom's apparent preference for remasters over full-scale remakes (seen in the success of the Resident Evil remakes), a ground-up remake of the Dead Rising series seems unlikely. This strategic focus might prevent resource dilution across two zombie franchises. Despite this, the possibility of a Dead Rising 5 remains.
2024 has already seen a wave of successful remasters and remakes, including Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Braid: Anniversary Edition, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster. Should Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster launch this year, it would join other Xbox 360-era remasters such as Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP, and Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered.
