The DCU's The Authority film faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film, based on the brutally effective WildStorm superhero team, has encountered significant hurdles.
Gunn cited the project's complexity and the success of Amazon's The Boys as contributing factors. He explained that adapting The Authority in a landscape already shaped by similar, successful properties presents unique challenges, particularly with the evolving overall narrative and the need to create a distinct identity. He also mentioned the ongoing storylines of already established characters within the DCU as a complicating factor. As a result, the film is currently on the "back burner."
It's worth noting that Angela Spica, aka The Engineer, a powerful member of The Authority, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy.
Other Chapter 1 projects have also faced delays. Waller, a spinoff of Peacemaker, experienced setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing well. Paradise Lost remains a priority, with the pilot currently in development. Swamp Thing, meanwhile, is on hold pending the availability of director James Mangold, and its status as a non-integral part of the larger DCU narrative allows for this flexibility.
