The critically acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is gearing up for an eagerly anticipated second season. According to an official press release from FX, Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the character of pilot John Blackthorn, will not only reprise his role but also take on the responsibilities of a co-executive producer for Season 2.
Hiroyuki Sanada, the lead actor who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, had committed to Season 2 back in May after the show was renewed, despite its initial conception as a limited series. Sanada has now been promoted to an executive producer role, following his contributions to the first season. Production for the new season is slated to kick off in January 2026 in Vancouver, the same location where the original series was filmed.
FX has described the upcoming season as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was adapted from James Clavell’s novel. The network provided further insights into the narrative connection between the two seasons:"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
"Part two of Shōgun is set 10 years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.”
While fans may have to wait until the end of 2026 for new episodes, the anticipation for the continuation of this exceptional series remains high.
