Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its eagerly awaited final patch, signaling the end of its remarkable journey. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 marks the concluding major update for the RPG. Following the release, BG3 experienced a significant boost in its player count, leaping from around 60,000 concurrent players to over 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam’s top 10 most played games.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on the player surge via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on April 22. He highlighted that the robust mod support allows them to shift focus towards their next ambitious project. It's worth noting that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe, setting their sights on a fresh venture.

In light of this, D&D's parent company, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will carry on the Baldur’s Gate legacy without Larian Studios. They are currently exploring partnerships with other studios that might take the helm for a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been a long time coming. This update is packed with exciting new content, including 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and numerous other enhancements. On the BG3 website, the developers provided a comprehensive list of patch notes. Compared to the November 2024 update, this final patch boasts an extended list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished end to BG3's development.

Larian Studios has poured considerable effort into perfecting BG3, as seen in the extensive updates and fixes included in this final version. Although Patch 8 marks their last major update, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
