Remember Project Mugen, the upcoming urban open-world RPG being developed by Naked Rain and published by NetEase? Well, there's an exciting update: Project Mugen has officially undergone a name change and is now called Ananta.
This RPG was first unveiled back in August 2023 at Gamescom. After what seemed like an endless wait with no updates, they've finally released a new trailer. More details are set to be unveiled on December 5th. But until then, take a look at the official trailer for Project Mugen, now known as Ananta.
Why the Name Change?
The developers haven't provided any official explanation for the name change yet. Interestingly, Ananta means "infinite" in Sanskrit, which aligns well with the original name, Mugen, which also means "infinite." The Chinese name further supports this theme of infinity.
The gaming community has mixed feelings about the name change, but there's a collective sigh of relief knowing that the project is still alive and kicking.
Meanwhile, gamers are already comparing Ananta to another upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness by Hotta Studio. Ananta's new trailer is slick, but it doesn't offer even a glimpse of gameplay.
For many players, Neverness to Everness still holds the upper hand. However, I personally find Project Mugen/Ananta visually more appealing.
Here’s Where Things Get Weird, Though
Ironically, the team behind Project Mugen has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with over 100k subscribers and videos that had garnered millions of views.
They did retain their Discord server and simply renamed it, but for everything else, they started from scratch. This move has left many gamers puzzled, as they could have simply renamed the existing accounts.
In Project Mugen or Ananta, you take on the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator tasked with managing paranormal chaos. The game features a diverse cast of characters including Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
