The Wheel of Time has come to an end on Prime Video as Amazon has canceled the series following Season 3.
Deadline reports that Prime Video opted not to renew The Wheel of Time for Season 4 after what it called "extended discussions." While executives reportedly appreciated the show, financial viability became the deciding factor.
Based on Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy novels with Rosamund Pike leading the cast, The Wheel of Time initially faced criticism for deviating from the source material in its first two seasons. However, Season 3 managed to win back most fans and appeared to be building momentum for future potential.
A Premature Ending for a Promising Show
Viewers will especially lament the cancellation given how much of the expansive Wheel of Time saga remains untold. The series had just begun finding its footing when the decision came down.
The show's high production costs apparently proved difficult for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios to justify, particularly with Amazon already investing heavily in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
As Deadline explained:
The Season 3 performance metrics ultimately didn't justify the production expenses for Prime Video, and alternative solutions couldn't be found despite negotiations with Sony TV.
IGN awarded The Wheel of Time Season 3 an 8/10, praising how "the series finally fulfills its potential with richly developed characters inhabiting Robert Jordan's intricate fantasy world."
The Wheel Continues Turning in Gaming
While the television adaptation concludes, fans can look forward to an upcoming "AAA Open-World RPG." IGN recently interviewed iwot Studios, which controls the Wheel of Time gaming rights, about this project currently in development.
