The trailer not only introduces the new Xenomorph design but also evokes a strong sense of nostalgia by closely mirroring the aesthetic of Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 film, Alien. A scene set in a MU/TH/UR control room, strikingly similar to the Nostromo's, sets the stage for the unfolding horror. Here, a crew member desperately seeks help as the Xenomorph closes in, while Morrow, portrayed by Babou Ceesay, coldly reports the escape of the "specimens," declares the crew dead, and sets the ship on a collision course with Earth. The trailer then shifts to six soldiers approaching what appears to be the crashed ship, hinting at the dire fate awaiting them.
The trailer raises numerous intriguing questions: Will Morrow survive? What drives his actions? Are there any other survivors, and has anyone been impregnated by the Xenomorph? How will the soldiers meet their end? These questions set the stage for Alien: Earth, which follows a mysterious space vessel crashing on Earth. A young woman, played by Sydney Chandler, and a group of tactical soldiers make a chilling discovery that pits them against the planet's greatest threat.
Set in the year 2120, FX's Alien series takes place after the events of Prometheus and just before those of the original Alien. This timeline has led fans to speculate that Alien: Earth might show the Nostromo's departure from Earth or reveal how Weyland-Yutani first learned about the Xenomorphs. For context, the recently released Alien: Romulus is set between Alien and Aliens.
In January of last year, showrunner Noah Hawley shared his vision for Alien: Earth, explaining his decision to steer away from the backstory established in Prometheus. Hawley, who consulted with Ridley Scott on various aspects of the series, chose to embrace the "retro-futurism" of the original films, distancing himself from the bioweapon narrative to focus on the lore that made the franchise iconic.
FX's Alien: Earth is set to premiere on Hulu in the summer of 2025. Additionally, Alien: Romulus 2 is currently in development, promising more thrilling adventures in the Alien universe.
