The first official trailer for the movie "Rust," starring Alec Baldwin, has been released. The film, set to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025, marks a poignant moment following a tragic incident during its production. On October 22, 2021, a prop gun used by Baldwin accidentally discharged, fatally wounding cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The incident occurred as Baldwin was demonstrating how he would draw his weapon from its holster, pointing it at the camera where Hutchins and Souza stood.
The film's plot unfolds in 1880s Kansas, where young Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), after accidentally killing a rancher, faces a death sentence. In a dramatic turn of events, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail. Together, they embark on a perilous journey to Mexico, pursued relentlessly by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).
The tragedy on set led to significant legal repercussions. The prop gun, mistakenly believed to be a "cold gun" free of live ammunition, was the center of the investigation. Charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, while Rust's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for preparing the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with ensuring the gun's safety, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
"Rust" made its debut at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Although Baldwin was not present, director Joel Souza attended and spoke about Hutchins, emphasizing her passion for filmmaking and the significance of celebrating her life and work in a place she cherished.
