Farlight Games, fresh off their successful 2024 collaboration with Lilith Games on AFK Journey, has a new contender in the mobile gaming arena: Ace Trainer. Currently in soft launch in South Korea and the US, this game blends several popular genres in a way that's both intriguing and potentially overwhelming.
Ace Trainer is essentially a Pokémon-inspired creature-collecting game, but with a zombie-infested twist. Instead of traditional turn-based battles, players engage in tower defense-style combat, deploying their trained creatures against waves of undead. Adding another layer of complexity (and perhaps a touch of chaos), pinball mechanics are incorporated, allowing players to strategically shoot for resources.
This eclectic mix of tower defense, creature collection, and pinball elements creates a unique gameplay experience. While its global release remains uncertain, the multi-regional soft launch suggests Farlight has high hopes for Ace Trainer's success.
A Risky Gamble?
Ace Trainer attempts to do a lot. The combination of PvP, PvE, tower defense, and pinball mechanics is ambitious, to say the least. While individually these elements are popular, their simultaneous inclusion raises questions about long-term playability and balance. Will this "kitchen sink" approach pay off, or will it prove too much to manage effectively? Only time will tell.
