A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike other consoles, the Switch boasts a surprisingly smaller selection of distinct Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. This list focuses on titles available on the Switch eShop, excluding those found within the Nintendo Switch Online app. We've compiled ten favorites – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS titles – presented without any specific ranking. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. A fun comparison piece, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Regardless of version, Steel Empire is a captivating title, enjoyable even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This is the starting point for a fantastic side-scrolling action series. While the initial entry might have some rough edges, these are smoothed out in later installments. Mega Man Zero is a must-play, and a great entry point to the series.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay experiences, both excelling in their respective styles. Battle Network is a unique RPG with a strategic battle system incorporating action elements. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original offers substantial fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is incredibly addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance this exceptional title, a top-tier third-party GBA game.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae as a major gaming figure. This title occupies a unique space, born from the ashes of an unreleased GBA game (which is also slated for release soon!).
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigations and dramatic courtroom scenes. The blend of humor and compelling narratives is masterful. The first game sets a high bar, though later installments are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you utilize your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a worthy alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the replacement of touch controls with standard button controls. Play them all!
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is a commendable effort. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
